Three-Assessments

3 TESTS IN 3 MINUTES CAN REVEAL POTENTIAL VELOCITY AND HEALTH IN BASEBALL PITCHERS

3 ASSESSMENTS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Below are three assessments that pitchers can do right now to see if there is any concern with how they move. Results can alter the way a player trains in the gym or on the field, both physically and mentally. The only equipment needed is a bat, PVC pipe or something like a broomstick.

Pelvic Rotation: Player must rotate their pelvis, independent of their shoulders. If the player moves their shoulders, place your hands on their shoulders (with permission), and have the player repeat the test. If a player rotates smoothly, independent of their shoulders, they pass. If they need assistance, it can be a stability/strength in the muscles around the torso.

Beighton (1)

Beighton Score (0-9 points): Give yourself a point for each thumb touching the wrist, pinky past 90 degrees, elbow and knee past 180 degrees, and hands flat on the ground.

Hip Internal Rotation: The leg should move independent. The waste or shoulders should not move during this test. If player does move, support their pelvis by placing your hands on their hips and holding as they attempt the test again. If a player touches the bat, they pass. If they touch with assistance, their may be a stability/strength issue in the muscles around the hip.

WHAT IF THEY FAIL THE TEST?

If they fail the pelvic rotation or hip internal rotation test, this could be due to a number of different reasons and it is recommended to reach out to a medical professional to further evaluate the player.
